Awards Night 2006

 
Saturday evening saw the Dover lifeguard club presenting awards to its members who have had successes throughout the year in all levels of competition, both in the pool and in the open water division of the sport.  This has been a good year for the club and the high level of recipients of awards was a testament to this.  At the beginning of the year the squad took part in the British long distance swimming association (BLDSA) 1 hour postal swim. There were awards for Ben Andrew, Joe Bisset, Callum Basford, James Cotton, Adam Delo, Matt Farran, Sam Gibbs, Bradley Harvey, Dan Latham, Olly Latham, Stirling Mason, Luke Matcham, Dima Miller, Dan Pott, Tom Russell, Dan Seagrove-Castle, Liam Steer, Ally Walker, Evan Waters, Kye Westgarth, Jamie Woodard and Sam Woodard.  For the girls there were awards for Laura Austin, Laura Basford, Megan Basford, Katie Brown, Abi Cox, Megan Curtis, Hannah Delo, Tessa Dunford, Amy Gibbs, Olivia Harvey, Charlotte Hyde, Natasha Hyde, Steph Jordan, Freya Killin, Alice Latham, Katie Latham, Holly McCurry, Corriene Miller, Siobhan Philpott, Gemma Prosser, Kaira Redman, Saskia Seagrove Castle, Dominika Szucsova and Ione Walker. 

The BLDSA medal winners were Bronze- Laura Austin(14-15 years), Silver- James Cotton (20-24 years) and Gold- Kaira Redman(20-24) and Dominika Szucsova(10-11). The club also earned silver medals from the BLDSA in the girls 10-11 and 12-13 age group relays and gold medals in the girls 14-15 years relay.  A large number of the club’s swimmers have taken part in this years British open water Championships and there were awards for Laura Austin, Tori Bates, Katie Brown, Nicola Brown, Abi Cox, Corriene Miller,Sophie Mitchenson, Adam Delo, Stirling Mason, Tom Russell and Dan Seagrove-castle.  In the club championships there were awards in the 10/u age group for- Matt Austin and Grace Beer 3rd, Jamie Woodard and Alice Latham 2nd, Ben Evans and Katie Latham 1st.  In the 10-12 yr age group trophies were received by- Sam Gibbs and Megan Basford 3rd, Sam Woodard and Sophie Weymouth 2nd, Matt Farran and Dominka Szucsova 1st.  The 13-16 age group saw Adam Delo and Tom Russell tie for 2nd place with Daniel Seagrove castle in 1st and for the girls Nicola brown was 3rd, Corriene Miller 2nd and Laura Austin was 1st.  The senior age group had 3rd places for Nakai Redman and Sophie mitchenson,2nd places for Stirling Mason and Tori Bates and 1st place awards for Dima Miller and Kaira Redman. 

In the Masters competiton There was first place for Siobham Philpott and Peter Hanson with club coach Lyndon Dunsbee in 2nd.  The Bill Charlesworth trophy for achievement in the small pool , which is decided by the teachers, was awarded to Jarred Kerr.Thre Gaunt Sheild for most improved swimmer, decided by the coaching team , was Sam Woodard.  For the 1500m swim the Mitchell cups were awarded to seniors Stirling Mason and Kaira Redman. The ODO cup for 1500m 13-16 went to Dan Seagrove castle and the Denis Poltock cup for 13-16 800m went to Layra Austin. There were also awards for the 12/u 1500m/800m and the Hughes cups went to Matt Farran and Dominika Szucsova.
The club maintains its charitable status thanks to its commitment to lifesaving and this year saw successes in the open water lifesaving competition for junior boys Ben Andrew 2nd and Dan Seagrove Castle 1st and seniors Kaira and Nakai Redman took the 1st place awards .The Overall champion was Nakai Redman.

There was also a lifesaving skill competition in the pool and there was Joint 1st place for Katie Brown and Tasha Hyde in the junior girls.In the junior boys section Ashley Higgins finished 3rd,Ben Andrew 2nd, and 1st place for Dan Seagrove castle.The intermediate girls saw 2nd place for Laura Basford and 1st for Charlotte Hyde and in the senior age group Kaira and Nakai Redman took the 1st place honours again. There was also a Lifesaving distinction award which has not been received by members of the club for over 30 years which was received by Nakai Redman which indicates the levels of commitment shown by this young swimmer.

Water polo awards were-Junior player of the year-Bradley Harvey. The Players player-Ally Walker. Top scorer-Dima Miller. Coaches player of the year-Chris Keen and Female player of the year Kaira Redman.
National Plaques, for those who swim at the national championships at Sheffield were awarded to Robert Messenger, Dima Miller and Mathew Basford.  The new Club Captains were announced on the night and for the next year they will be Laura Austin and Stirling Mason, they both received the captains cups.  The Jeron memorial cup and Peckham memorial cup for open water endeavour throughout the season were awarded to Adam Delo and Katie Brown who both also received the first award from the Doris Aylard Memorial Fund. This fund was set up by the Nice family who have has association with the club for over 60 years and Alex Nice ,himself a former swimmer for the club presented Katie and Adam with their cheques from the Fund.

The final awards of the night were in recognition for the helpers behind the scenes. Pat Austin took the good egg cup, which is presented by the friends of Dover Lifeguard club for all the hard work she has put into the running of the clubs membership affairs. Rita Kingsbury and Bryan Swinerd both received Lifetime vice president plaques for their dedication to the club over the years. There was also a special award to outgoing chairman Terry Kingsbury who has been with the club for nearly 30 years , he still remains on an advisory basis but will be missed by everyone. His years of guidance have seen the club achieve success thanks to his dedication and commitment to the swimmers.
