| Guilford Designated Meet |
Three members of the Dover squad had travelled further to the 50 metre pool at Guilford to try out their skills in the longer pool having had to train in only 25metre pools due to the lack of investment in international sized pools in the Kent area. With the 2012 olympics just over the horizon the swimmers were hoping to record some fast times and see if they were able to adapt their swims to the different environment. The small band were justly rewarded with all three recording pb’s over their entry times. The swimmers pb’s were-Dominika Scucsoua (100breast,400 free,100 IM), Dan Seagrove Castle (400 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 50 fly, 200 IM), Sophie Weymouth( 200 free, 100 breast, 200 IM, 400 free, 200 fly, 100 back, 200 breast,200 back) Coach Lyndon Dunsbee was quick to praise his squad,” all of our swimmers have had a hectic 3 months, most swimming at gala’s every weekend since August,. It is a true testament to their determination ,guts and levels of fitness that they can maintain such a high personal best rate at the end of such a gruelling part of the season. |

Just how valuable the point earned by Oliver was became evident when the final scores were totalled up and showed that Dover had edged into 3rd place by just the one point having been placed 4th for most of the evening. | MASTERS NATIONAL CHAMPION |
At the recent Masters National Championships held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, Dover lifeguard’s Rob Messenger recently became the national Breaststroke champion in the 18-24yrs age group. Rob, who was unable to produce a PB on the day after missing key parts of his training due to work commitments was happy with the result but knows he can produce better. Rob was the fastest 18-24 yr old and 3rd fastest Breaststroker in the pool on the day across all age groups. His time of 29.85 for 50m breaststroke was good enough to ensure the gold medal, automatic qualification for next years nationals and gains him a place at the upcoming GB trials. ”I feel I can make more time from my reaction time off the block and more from speeding up my turn, but overall I was happy with the way I swam.” He also passed his thanks to coach Lyndon Dunsbee for setting an individual training regime to bring about his success. |

Dover’s Matt Basford, a veteran of many finals and national qualifier for 2006, stormed to a 1st place and new pb in the men’s open 100m butterfly leaving clear water between him and the rest of the field from start to finish showing just how talented this youngster is amongst such a strong line up. | First round Speedo league |
The Dover Lifeguards club squad were in
action in the first round of the seasons Speedo league last weekend at the
pool in the park at Woking. The ‘guards squad was the youngest team
the club has fielded in this competition for many years but the swimmers
were ready for the challenge of swimming up age groups against some of the
best teams in the south. The relay performances from all teams showed
a steely resolve with many of the teams snatching much needed points over
the last 5m of each race.
Individual performances of the night saw many PBs and some superb swims to grab points for the team. Daniel Pott, recently returning to the squad after his first spell at the Duke of York School, swam strongly to finish first in the 11/u 50m back and 2nd in the 11/u 50m breast. Callum Basford and twin sister Megan both won their individual races, Megan in the 11/u 50m fly and 50m free and Callum with the 11/u 50m free. Older brother Matthew kept the family standard flying with a fine swim in the boys open 100m back to finish first. Dominika Szucsova, swimming to her usual high standard, finished first in the 13/u 100m fly and second in the 13/u 100m free to bring in a good haul of points. Sophie Weymouth, having just recovered from a knee injury, stormed home in the 11/u 50m breast to finish a fine second place. The senior boys also swam well with a hard fight with second place for Adam Patterson in the Open 100m fly and second placing for Dima Miller in the Open 100m breast. When the final series of relays finished the points totals showed just how well the young team had done with the guidance of Coach Lyndon Dunsbee. The team finished in third place which was a great start to the season and look forward to hosting the next round at their home pool in November. |

| Development Gala |
Dover Lifeguards opened the new swimming season in style with a stunning victory in their home pool. Having finished the last season of Development galas on a high with victory at the Faversham open air pool, the team were keen to put into practice all the hard work and skills gained from early morning training during the school holidays. The galas opened with a bang when the ‘guards squadron breaststroke relay team stormed home in a comfortable first place, leading from start to finish over the twelve legs of the race. This gala was an opportunity for the club coach, Lyndon Dunsbee, to see how the outcome of his policy of integrating British Swimming’s Long Term Athlete Development plan into his training programme. Following the success in the opening relay there were first places for Olivia Harvey (11/u breast 48.81), Tasha Hyde (12/u fly 37.78), Sam Woodard (12/u fly 38.75), Megan Curtis(10/u back 44.56) and Adam Delo(15/u breast 38.88). This fine set of results was supported by a second place for Gemma Prosser in the 18/u backstroke(37.21) and the 11/u freestyle relay team( Lewis Young, Oliver Latham, Megan Curtis and Katie Latham) who showed a superb fighting spirit to come from behind to touch in first for maximum points. Gemma Prosser then opened the next series of individual races with a first place finish in the 18/u fly in 35.38. The team were now firing on all cylinders with top three finishes in 11 of the next 14 races. There were first places for Hannah Delo (11/u back 43.84), Joe Bisset (11/u back 44.91), Alice Latham (9/u breast 48.81), Tasha Hyde(12/u freestyle 34.31), Oliver Latham(12/u freestyle 34/38) and Freya Killin (15/u back 37.25).
In the next set of relays the Dover team finished first in the 10/u
freestyle relay and 12/u freestyle relay adding to the clubs points totals
and pushing them into first place in the gala, a position the team were to
fight hard to retain for the rest of the afternoon. The last set of individual swims produced a series of first places for Stirling Mason (18/u breast 38.50), Katie Latham (11/u f/s 37.38), Amy Gibbs (12/u back 39.50) and Callum Basford(12/u back 41.25). This led into the last series of relays with only a handful of points between the teams vying for the top places, the points on offer were vital. In the 12/u medley relay the Dover teams stormed to a fine first place thanks to determined swims from Matt Farran, Callum Basford, Tasha Hyde and Amy Gibbs. Next up was the 10/u medley relays and Tom Latham, Ethan Harvey, Megan Curtis and Saskia Seagrove-Castle gritted their teeth and swam superbly to finish second.
It was now the turn of the 18/u medley team (Matt Farran, Charlotte Hyde,
Laura Basford and Stirling Mason) and they led from start to finish to set
up a nail biting finale to the afternoon in the squadron freestyle relay.
The team received a new “Dover Development Gala Winners” trophy which
dwarfed the young members of the team. This impressive piece of silverware
along with the second and third place trophies were kindly donated by the
Friends of the Dover Lifeguard Club. |

| Emma Harrison achieves one of her dreams |
![]() The `Guards 15 year old Emma Harrison was unable to be part of the team that swam Saturday night after a last-minute call up from "Queen of the channel" Alison Streeter to make up part of a relay team in its efforts to conquer the channel. Emma had been part of the Lifeguards team training for their relay swim and was the non-swimming reserve during their recent successful crossing, this was a huge disappointment for her as sea swimming has been one of Emma's passions for some time. When Alison Streeter turned to the club for a sixth swimmer to make up her team ,there was no hesitation from Emma in accepting the challenge. The rest of the team was made up of adults and Emma had to swim 3 times during the crossing ,once in the pitch black of night, showing a great determination and courage. The team went on to complete the crossing in just over 15 hours. |

Development Gala's
|
Dover Lifeguard club hosted the first of the new season's development gala's on Saturday at the towns leisure centre, welcoming clubs from Canterbury, Ashford, Faversham, Folkestone and Gillingham (Black Lion). The Dover team opened the gala with a storming swim in the squadron breaststroke relay touching home in first place only to be disqualified for a faulty takeover. This did not distract the 'Guards from the task in hand and in the next events, Gemma Prosser(36.41)and Alistair Walker(32.84) both swimming the 18/u Backstroke finished in second and first respectively. This was quickly followed by a first place in the 12/u butterfly for Tessa Dunford in a time of 38.22. The points total was added to by two second places by Oliver Latham, in the 10/u backstroke he recorded a time of 46.61 and in the 10/u I.M a time of 1.45.14. After the first quarter of the gala the Dover team were well placed in joint second. As they entered the second quarter of the gala the team was amassing a good points total with first places for Amy Gibbs(12/u Freestyle 34.51), Dan Pott(12/u Freestyle 35.73). There was also second places for Sophie Weymouth(11/u back 43.54), Sam Gibbs(11/u back 44.02, 10/u Fly 45.50), Adam Delo(13/u back 38.42) and with third places from Mel Richardson, Angus Killin and Natasha Hyde the team were in joint first at the halfway point of the gala. The second half of the gala started with a fine swim from Laura Austin who finished in first place in the 18/u freestyle in 31.38 and earnt herself a speeding ticket meaning she cannot swim freestyle again in this series. In the 11/u butterfly Natasha Hyde (41.78) and Dan Pott (43.53) both finished in first place. Supported with a first place by Tessa Dunford in the 12/u breastsroke(45.03). There were also second places for Sam Harrison (10/u Freestyle 40.16) and Sian Steer(13/u Fly 37.63) and also a third place for Katie Latham in the 9/u back. The Dover team were now leading the gala by one point but with only twenty points separating first and last place anyone could win in the last quarter. The Dover team showed a renewed determination going into the final quarter with a first place in the 18/u Breaststroke for Charlotte Hyde in a time of 40.28. In the 12/u backstroke Katie Brown(42.42) and Luke Matcham(39.53) both finished in first place. Megan Curtis recorded a time of 51.39 in the 9/u Butterfly to finish second and with third places from Katie Brown and Evan Waters the 'Guards were leading by two points going into the final four relays. Despite a first place from the 12/u mixed medley team of Luke Matcham, Katie Brown, Tessa Dunford and Joe Bisset the team was pipped to first place and had to settle for a good second place after a superb swim from the whole team. "The team spirit from all of the swimmers was one of the main reasons the team performed so well after the summer break. This will carry them through the next season along with their talent and determination and will produce some stars of the future". "Thanks to all of the parents/volunteers who helped organise and run the gala and made it a huge success and the closest, most exciting, competition in this series to date" |
